Evaluation of various means of transport for urban areas

Abstract: Background: Personal transportation in urban areas is characterised by different transportation technologies with significantly varying properties regarding usability, infrastructural requirements and environmental impacts. This characterisation motivates the objective evaluation of mobility solutions, based on different criteria. State of the art evaluations in the scientific literature mainly focus on one specific criterion at a time. The most common criteria investigated are found in energy demand or equiva… Show more

“…The work of [16] mentioned that bike-sharing programs have significantly positive externalities, including the economy, the environment, and health-related externalities. Moreover, introducing bike-sharing systems gives an opportunity to organize public transport interchanges better [17]. Shared bicycles facilitate allow getting to stops and stations for those who do not own a private bike.…”

“…It should not be neglected, however, that consumer behavior is another factor. Brunner et al [142] have recently analyzed several urban transportation options, and one result of their study is given in Fig. 10.…”

“…Meanwhile, MCDA rarely considers user behaviors, which play a highly important role in defining impacts of transport solutions. In an effort to create a more comprehensive approach to evaluate different transport technologies for personal transportation, (Brunner, Hirz, Hirschberg, & Fallast, 2018) introduces an objective evaluation using Weighted Traffic Performance Indices (WTPI). The WTPI is able to combine life cycle perspectives with user-related criteria to assess various forms of transport modes.…”
