Evaluation with Doppler sonography of mesenteric blood flow in celiac disease.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE. The aim of thisstudywasto investigatewith Doppler sonography the vanations of resistance in the superior mesenteric artery, both at fasting and in the postprandial state, in patients with celiac disease.SUBJECTSAND METHODS. Twenty-fivepatientswith celiacdisease(20 women, five men; mean age, 30 ± 7 yeas) and 10 healthy volunteers (seven women, three men; mean age, ±6 yeas)were examined with Doppler sonography. Nineteen patients were untreated (no dietary restrictions) and six patients were treated w… Show more

“…For this purpose, we used a recently proposed technique (SICUS), which has been reported to improve the diagnostic accuracy of ultrasonographic investigation of the small bowel. [3][4][5][6]17,18 In addition, SICUS clearly showed the marked difference in Kerckring's fold and peristaltic wave numbers between celiac patients and control group. 15,16 In 1999, Rettenbacher et al identified nine echographic parameters suggestive of celiac disease and expressed three of them (ie, transverse diameter of small bowel loops, thickness of intestinal wall, and diameter of mesenteric lymph nodes) with numerical values suggestive of a normal or pathologic picture.…”

“…Most studies of differences in velocities and resistive index between the fasting state and the postprandial state were conducted in patients with cirrhosis of the liver or inflammatory diseases (19). However, blunting of fasting-postprandial differences in peak systolic velocity has been reported in patients with visceral artery stenosis (20).…”

“…Moderately enlarged lymph nodes can be delineated [65]. The mesenteric vessels can be dilated and vascularization of the bowel wall is at least pronounced, or definitive hypervascularization is present [66]. A steatosis hepatis in thin patients can be a hint for malabsorption.…”
