Evaporation Crystallization of RDX by Ultrasonic Spray

Abstract: Cyclotrimethylene trinitramine (RDX) with size of 0.8 to 2.6 μm was produced by evaporation crystallization of RDX with ultrasonic spray. In the experimental range of the present work, the size of RDX crystals was found to be strongly affected by operating parameters including RDX concentration and furnace temperature. The size of RDX crystals was reduced as RDX concentration decreased and furnace temperature increased. The formation of random-shaped RDX particles due to agglomeration could be explained by coa… Show more

“…The importance of improving the crystal morphology can be highlighted by its ability to increase the specific impulse by 30% to 50% [12]. Successful modification of RDX crystal morphology by ultrasound was previously reported [9,13], but not for ADN. It is known that ultrasound treatment can induce oxidation reactions for many substrates, as reported in [14,15].…”

“…The spray-drying [20][21][22][23] method was suitable for the preparation of heat-sensitive substances due to the stable preparation process, the convenient operation, and the products which did not need to be crushed and sieved after drying. The spray-drying method was used to prepare the spherical RDX with a particle size of 0.5 μm to 4 μm by Jingyu et al [21] with the spray speed of 10 ml/min.…”
