Evapotranspiration increment was underestimated in China due to underrepresented land cover changes

Abstract: Numerous evapotranspiration (ET) products have been produced using various approaches and diverse forcing data even as the magnitude and trends of ET show divergence. We simulated ET using updated land use and cover change (LUCC) data in China from 1900 to 2020. We found that China’s ET increased slightly from 1900 to 1980, but it increased rapidly after 1980 due to LUCC characterized by forest expansion (2.05 mm yr-1, P < 0.01).
