Everybody Wants to Experiment: Assessing Motivation to Participate in a Chemistry Family Learning Course

Abstract: There is a need to engage people with chemistry and to facilitate learning about chemistry in both nonformal and informal learning environments. A variety of platforms have been used to achieve this, including science festivals, summer camps, and so on. The events are voluntary, and participants need to be motivated independently to engage. The aim of the study was to systematically investigate what motivates children and their parents to participate in a specific nine-month chemistry course designed for famil… Show more

“…18−20 It is also useful to note that efforts to understand the impact of chemistry outreach through evaluation of programs and chemistry education research (CER) have been carried out as well. These efforts have focused both on demonstrating the impacts of outreach on participants 21,22 and on students who present them. 23 This modest sample emphasizes only some of the topics encompassed by the collection of outreach-related articles in the Journal over its first 101 years.…”

“…Lunetta and Hofstein continue to give insight into how essential it is to select experiences that provide students with meaningful learning opportunities. Teachers, instructors, and informal educators are constantly seeking demonstrations, experiments, or experiences that can enhance students’ learning and engagement. Demonstrations, which can be conducted in various settings, such as classrooms and laboratories, prove to be valuable educational tools. In 2022, Salta et al conducted a review of 51 papers on hands-on laboratory experiments that use common household supplies. The review highlighted the importance of simple activities that allow students to have laboratory experiences even when attending virtual classes or are at a distance due to a pandemic.…”

“…Generation after generation of students has come to enjoy chemistry after overcoming learning "barriers", but some of them fail and quit. Chemistry is one of the subjects considered difficult by students because they have to learn a lot of abstract things, one of which is in the nomenclature of chemicals (Redhana et al, 2017;Treagust et al, 2018;Schlüter et al, 2022).…”
