Evidence and Characterization of a New Decamolybdocobaltate Cobalt Salt:  An Efficient Precursor for Hydrotreatment Catalyst Preparation

Abstract: Heteropolyanions (HPAs) based on molybdenum and cobalt could be used as an alternative to the conventional ammonium heptamolybdate and cobalt nitrate precursors for the preparation of Co−Mo/Al2O3 hydrotreating catalysts. With this objective in mind, a cobalt salt of decamolybdocobaltate anion has been synthesized. This salt allows us to prepare catalyst with a Co/Mo atomic ratio of 0.5 corresponding to the optimum value encountered with classical catalyst preparation. The crystal structure refinement has been … Show more

“…In both entities the Co 3+ atoms are surrounded by a crown of molybdenum octahedra. In order to have a high Co/Mo atomic ratio, cobalt salts of these HPAs [40,41] have been prepared, which moreover allows us to avoid the presence of any foreign counterions such as ammonium or nitrate.…”

“…The formation of isopolyanions takes place at higher concentrations in acidic solutions, while H x Mo 7 O 24 (6Àx)À complexes are found to be dominant in solutions of pH 3-6. At lower pH the formation of larger clusters, such as H x Mo 8 O 26 (4Àx)À has been reported as well. Furthermore, Mo-isopolyanions are known to react with various cations in solution to form so-called heteropolyanions.…”

“…Indeed, this resulted in catalyst materials with a much higher activity [11,25,26]. For the same reason, NH 4 + free solutions were used for impregnation, forcing the Co 2+ to act as a counter ion for Mo-anions [27,28].…”

“…In a recent work [8] we therefore propose the preparation of oxidic precursors with well-defined Anderson based HPA. In particular the use of cobalt salts allowed us to increase the Co/Mo atomic ratio [9]. For [Co 2 Mo 10 based HPA and to conventional preparations, this HPA cobalt salt appears as the best starting material for the preparation of HDS catalysts with improved performances [10].…”
