Evidence and potential mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine for the treatment of type 2 diabetes: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has recorded knowledge of diabetes for over 2000 years. Because a considerable number of TCM studies exhibit design defects, such as limited intervention duration, small sample sizes and inconsistent efficacy evaluations, the role of TCM in the treatment of diabetes cannot be fully elucidated. In this review, we evaluate randomized controlled trials of prediabetes, diabetes and diabetic complications published in the past decade. We found that TCM could significantly improve … Show more

“…Several lines of evidence suggest that incretin-based therapies, including GLP-1 receptor agonists and dipeptidyl peptidase-4 inhibitors, may stabilize or reverse the b-cell loss and slow or prevent the progression of prediabetes (35)(36)(37). In addition, the use of Chinese herbs in the prevention and treatment of diabetes has received increasing interest (38,39).…”

“…Such as golden thread, prepared rehmannia root, ginseng, kudzuvine root, rhubarb root and rhizome, etc. can lower blood glucose level and improve clinical outcomes, and may also lower HbA1c levels [10] .The composition of Hantangping contains these Chinese medicines. In terms of TCM theory, the TCM compound Hantangping was established on the basis of the therapeutic idea of "lowering blood glucose not far from cold, strengthening body depending on nourishing spleen and kidney, and qi and blood preferring smooth circulation".…”

“…DM has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients and imposes a heavy burden on the finance and public health care system. The use of TCM for treating DM is increasingly gaining attention, with clinical trials demonstrating that herbal medicine can lower blood glucose and provide additional benefits, such as improving insulin resistance and reducing lipid levels and weight [1315, 25], and pharmacological studies showing that TCM can improve islet function, increase insulin secretion, and enhance the use of glucose in peripheral tissues [2631]. TCM can also be used to treat diabetic complications through improving blood viscosity, microcirculation, and oxidative stress-related abnormalities [32].…”
