Evidence-Base Update for Parenting Stress Measures in Clinical Samples

Abstract: Parenting stress is relevant to the development, maintenance, and amelioration of youth mental, emotional, and behavioral health issues. This Evidence Base Update evaluates the empirical literature on the measurement of parenting stress to guide future research and inform clinical decision-making. After a comprehensive literature search, we identified eight well-studied measures of parenting stress, to which we applied the criteria put forth by Hunsley and Mash (2008) and extended by Youngstrom et al. “…Women experience extreme physical and emotional stress during childbirth and up to 16% of women exhibit clinically important PTSD symptoms (Horsch and Ayers, 2016;Dekel et al, 2017). Additionally, raising multiple children may lead to chronic stress and this could be more prominent when raising children with behavioral problems or illnesses (Barroso et al, 2018;Holly et al, 2019). Hippocampal atrophy is well known for its association with stress and the hypopituitary-pituitary-adrenal axis hyperactivity (Lupien et al, 2009).…”

“…The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on families vary considerably based on what contextual stress factors parents are exposed to; data indicates that the consequences of lockdown tend to negatively affect low-income families the most [ 35 ]. More specifically, parental stress represents a negative psychological response to parental obligations: caring for children while simultaneously worrying about not having enough resources to meet their needs can be a heavy burden for parents [ 36 , 37 , 38 ]. Several personal characteristics of both parents and children in a specific family configuration, together with various life stressors, may contribute to an increased sense of psychological pressure resulting from the caregiving role [ 39 ].…”

“…In Abidin ( 1992 )‘s Parental Stress Model, parental stress is a key determinant of parenting practices, especially dysfunctional parenting. Based on Deater-Deckard ( 1998 ), parental stress has been defined as a psychological reaction when parents experience parental demands that are inconsistent with expectations (expectations of self or from others) or when parents do not have the resources to meet these demands (as cited in Holly et al 2019 ). Parental stress is conceptually distinct from other forms of stress that a parent might experience (e.g., marital or work stress), although they are often associated (Holly et al 2019 ).…”

The Parental Stress Model’s definition of parental stress also aligns with the definition of parental stress proposed by Lazarus and Folkman ( 1984 ), which posits that this stress arises from a parent’s appraisal of environmental stressors or demands associated with their parenting role.…”
