Evidence Based Dementia Personas: Human Factors Design for People Living with Dementia

Abstract: The complex needs of people with dementia can create challenges when designing care environments. A Human Factors and Ergonomics (HFE) approach to the design of dementia care environments was used to address this challenge, and support wellbeing and independence for system users. Four individual personas (Alison, Barry, Christine and David) and a couple persona (Chris and Sally) were developed to represent the needs of people living with dementia. The aim was to facilitate the exchange of information and exper… Show more

“…In the area of building design and thermal comfort, Jais et al [57] and McCracken et al [58] developed personas of people living with dementia to inform architects and designers. Goldstein et al [59] used inferred and invented personas to develop occupant behaviour models for thermal simulation, while Haines and Mitchell [60] drew on evidence collected from a 4-year study of energy-saving technologies for owner-occupiers to develop personas of different approaches to domestic energy retrofitting.…”

“…The final personas describe four stages of living with dementia as Alison, Barry, Christine and David [16]. They are available in two formats; firstly, as a dynamic wheel to indicate a good, average or bad day ( Figure 1) with green representing a good day, amber an average day and red a bad day.…”

“…8 This is especially important for patient care teams interacting with older adults with complex healthcare needs. Archetypes have been used in the design of dementia care environments, 9 temperature guidelines in homes for older adults, 10 and in digital education programs for seniors with diabetes. 11 Although archetypes are highly relevant to meeting the needs of users in real-world settings that are foundational to implementation science, little is known about applications for amplifying implementation effectiveness through use of archetypes.…”
