Evidence-based Nursing Practice for Health Promotion in Adults With Hypertension: A Literature Review

Abstract: Research-based evidence material provides an evidence-based nursing practice guideline with specific nursing process components on the topic. The evidence-based nursing practice guideline developed from this referential study for promoting health of adults with hypertension should be reflected in nursing practice in primary healthcare settings. For a future study, focus groups and key informant interview are recommended with nurses who actually provide nursing services in primary healthcare settings to clients… Show more

“…13,16 Fundamental nursing care aspects producing successful behavioral change outcomes include consistent patient monitoring, scheduling regular follow-up and healthcare support (eg, education, counseling), control of substance abuse, such as alcohol and smoking, individualized dietary regimen, including fat, salt, fruit, and vegetable intake along with medication regimen monitoring and adjustment to manage BP. [9][10][11][12][13][14][15] Results from Chiu and Wong's randomized control trial further revealed that nurse-run clinics have positive effects on BP control, and adherence to health lifestyle and follow-up telephone call reinforce the coaching efforts of nurse clinical consultations. 15 Another 2014 nursing study targeting adults with AF emphasized the importance of individualized patient education to achieve positive outcome for older adults who had cognitive, as well as functional, limitations.…”

“…5 A review of 72 nursing studies targeting adults with hypertension describe how nurses concentrate on 7 major areas: BP management, weight control, alcohol consumption, physical activity, smoking cessation, adherence to medication regimen, and diet considerations (eg, increase fruit and vegetable intake, reduce excess salt intake, etc). 9 For those women with AF, the CHA 2 DS 2 -VASc Calculator (see Table) that determines the ischemic stroke risk in patients with AF should be performed. 10,11 A score of 0 is low risk for stroke, whereas a score of 1 is moderate, and any patient score >1 is considered at high risk.…”

“…The latest recommendations for management of HBP have considerably emphasized individual's promoting health through the modification of their lifestyle in community settings [7,20]. Although lifelong diseases such as HBP usually cannot be cured, in most cases they can be prevented and controlled toward higher level of health with healthy lifestyle modifications [5,[8][9][10][11]19]. Among the strategies used to promote health knowledge, behavior, and status, nursing practice interventions in primary health care appears to offer a promising avenue to better meet the needs of vulnerable populations with HBP [10].…”

Among the strategies used to promote health knowledge, behavior, and status, nursing practice interventions in primary health care appears to offer a promising avenue to better meet the needs of vulnerable populations with HBP [10]. The purpose of this study was 1) to describe the nursing interventions related to health promotion in adults with HBP in a community nursing center (CNC) based on evidence recommended by practice extant; 2) to identify the relationships between the nursing diagnoses, nursing interventions, and outcomes related to HBP as represented by the Omaha System (OS) in a CNC; 3) to explore nurses's opinions in relation to the quantitative findings of health promotion in adults with HBP using the OS in the CNC.…”
