Evidence for an improvement in cognitive function following treatment of Schistosoma japonicum infection in Chinese primary schoolchildren.

Abstract: Abstract. A double-blind, placebo-controlled, treatment trial was conducted in Sichuan, China to investigate the unique and combined effects on the cognitive function (working memory) of children after treating geohelminth infections with albendazole and treating Schistosoma japonicum infection with praziquantel. One hundred eighty-one children 5-16 years of age participated. At baseline, the praziquantel and placebo groups were similar in all background characteristics. Three months after praziquantel treatme… Show more

“…Thus, schistosomerelated childhood malnutrition is probably a factor limiting human potential in areas of endemic infection, and persistent schistosomiasis transmission may contribute to stunting among adult rural Chinese populations. As well, recent research in Sichuan, China, indicates that infected children suffer cognitive impairment, with significant adverse effects on memory (131).…”

“…3,7,8 The public health importance of chronic malnutrition and anemia is in their intrinsically disabling effects. Related manifestations can often include reduced global functioning, 9 decreased physical performance, 10,11 and impaired cognition, 2,12,13 resulting in decreased human capital among adults in affected populations 14,15 with a related loss in years of healthy life. 9 Past studies showing improvements in nutritional status and cognition after adequate antiparasitic treatment highlight the importance of effective control to prevent cognitive and growth impairment before they become irreversible.…”

“…It is estimated that more than 97% of all cases occur in Africa [9], and the highest prevalence estimates and infection intensities are usually found in school-age children, adolescents and young adults [10,11] as well as in infants and pre-school children [12]. Schistosomiasis negatively impacts on children's physical development and school performance, and the debilitation caused by untreated infections undermines social and economic development in heavily affected areas [13][14][15][16]. Schistosomiasis may also negatively affect the tourism industry of endemic countries as a result of fear among tourists and visitors of becoming infected [17].…”
