“…This has previously been shown in Ref. [44], where only taking into account ρ 0 and ω mesons resulted in an inadequate fit, with a spurious peak at 0.6 GeV/c 2 in the π + π − invariant mass spectra, due to decays of K * 0 mesons, where the kaon is assigned the mass of a pion. As there is no particle identification used in this analysis, the effect due to K * 0 meson production is expected to be strong and it must be included in the fitting procedure.…”

“…Near threshold this is the only available channel, such that this cross section can be taken as a reasonable estimate of the total inclusive cross section. Further away from threshold bona fide measurements of the inclusive cross section are scarcer but we have identified four measurements in the literature at √ s =3.17, 27.45, 38.8, and 53 GeV [103][104][105][106][107]. We split the available data into two subsets, near-threshold exclusive production (defined as pp → ppη measurements for √ s ≤ 3 GeV) and far-fromthreshold inclusive data (defined as pp → ηX for √ s > 3 GeV).…”

“…The data is taken from Refs. [103][104][105][106][107][108] and fitted using the piece-wise procedure described in the text; the smooth curve is Eq. (B1).…”

“…The same-charge pairs (e + e + and e − e − ) provide a natural normalization of the uncorrelated background. This combinatorial method has successfully been used in the past for measurements involving opposite-sign pairs of pions or muons [14,15].…”
