“…In this study we have reviewed the already substantial literature on Late Cretaceous stratigraphy (Titheridge, 1977;Bussell, 1985;Wizevich et al, 1992;Bal and Lewis, 1994;Stark, 1996;Browne et al, 2008), paleontology Crosbie and Clowes, 1984;Raine, 1984;Hayward, 1985;Hayward and Raine, 1985;Pocknall et al, 1989;Crundwell et al, 1992;Kennedy et al, 2002;Higgs et al, 2004;Strong et al, 2004), and source rock potential (Thompson, 1982; Cook, 1987;Johnston et al, 1990;Thrasher, 1992b;Sykes and Dow, 2000;Sykes and Raine, 2008) for well and outcrop data. We include results from new outcrop studies, and petrographic analyses of selected outcrop and subcrop samples to illustrate the range of textures and compositions of Cretaceous sedimentary rocks present in the basin.…”

“…The North Cape Formation is widespread in the Taranaki Basin, yet has been penetrated by fewer than 20 wells to date. Siltstone and sandstone are the predominant lithologies in both outcrop and wells, but coals and conglomerate are locally prominent (Wainui and Puponga Members, Titheridge, 1977;Bussell, 1985;Wizevich et al, 1992;Bal and Lewis, 1994;King and Thrasher, 1996;Stark, 1996, andFresne Member, Thrasher, 1992a). These deposits represent shallow marine, paralic, and terrestrial environments formed during a major south-directed transgression at the end of the Cretaceous.…”

“…Wizevich et al (1992) indicated that parts of the North Cape Formation had dinoflagellates, and contained marine sedimentological structures such as bimodal ripples, mud drapes, and rare burrows. Sykes & dow Kennedy (1993).…”

“…Wizevich et al (1992) reported that a sample from the base of the North Cape Formation at the Wairoa River mouth contained a dinoflagellate cyst assemblage which indicated a late Haumurian age, either the Manumiella druggii or Alterbidinium acutulum Zones of Wilson (1984). Dinoflagellate cyst assemblages from outcropping North Cape Formation have recently been re-examined by Wilson (2004), who has taken into account refinements to the dinoflagellate cyst zonation made during the late 1990s (Roncaglia et al 1999;Crampton et al 2000), and concluded that the North Cape Formation spans the interval from the Palaeocystodinium granulatum Subzone of the Alterbidinium acutulum Zone to the top of the overlying Manumiella druggii Zone.…”

“…Syn-rift Pakawau Group sediments overlie basement west of the Wakamarama Fault where they form up to 4000 m of terrestrial and shallow marine strata of Haumurian (Maastrichtian) age (Wizevich et al 1992). These are overlain by Paleocene terrestrial beds of the Kapuni Group, which in turn are overlain unconformably by calcareous marine strata of the Ngatoro Group (King 1988;Thrasher 1992).…”
