Evidence for Nonlocal Electrodynamics in Planar Josephson Junctions

Abstract: We study the temperature dependence of the critical current modulation I(c)(H) for two types of planar Josephson junctions: a low-Tc Nb/CuNi/Nb and a high-Tc YBa2Cu3O(7-δ) bicrystal grain-boundary junction. At low T both junctions exhibit a conventional behavior, described by the local sine-Gordon equation. However, at elevated T the behavior becomes qualitatively different: the I(c)(H) modulation field ΔH becomes almost T independent and neither ΔH nor the critical field for the penetration of Josephson vorti… Show more

“…All previous theoretical studies considered a similar case [41,42,[44][45][46]. We note that junctions studied here and earlier [17,43] have intermediate electrode thickness d ∼ λ [53] and their sizes L x ∼ 5−6 µm are significantly larger that λ * ∼ 100 − 300 nm. Therefore, stray fields can not be neglected in the experiment.…”

“…For planar junctions, studied below, d e f f is determined by the size L x of junction electrodes. [27,[53][54][55][56] In the presence of AV the Josephson phase difference is a superposition of contributions from the Meissner state, ϕ M (H), and vortex-induced phase shift at zero field, ϕ V (0):…”

“…They differ significantly from conventional overlap (sandwich-type) junctions. In particular, electrodynamics of planar junctions is nonlocal when electrode thickness is less than the London penetration depth [24][25][26][27]. When magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the film plane, Meissner screening leads to spreading of magnetic field lines along the surface, as sketched in Fig.…”

“…This phenomenology is often observed in magnetically long junctions when the Josephson penetration depth λ J is much shorter than the width w [19]. For our specific planar type junctions, the Josephson penetration depth has to be calculated by considering nonlocal electrodynamics [20]. The nonlocal l J and local λ J [21] Josephson penetration depths are related by the expression…”
