“…The compounds 1-pentadecene, 2-ethyl-pbenzoquinone, limonene, and 1-tridecene identified in the extracts of U. dermestoides have been previously reported in studies to determine the chemical characteristics of the defensive secretions and sex-specific pheromones of U. dermestoides (17,18). The monoterpene hydrocarbons alpha-pinene, alpha-terpinene, phellandrene, and dimethylquinones have been reported in the defensive secretions of some Australian tenebrionid beetles (19,20).…”

“…A few isomers of the alkenes provisionally identified in our analyses have been implicated as semiochemicals or semiochemical components for beetles and honey bees. For example, 1‐undecene is a sexual pheromone for Bruchinae (Bruce, Martin, Smart, & Pickett, 2011) and an attractant for Carabidae (Evans, 1988); 1‐tridecene is a sexual pheromone for Tenebrionidae (Martins, Zarbin, & Almeida, 2010); 1‐pentadecene is an aggregation pheromone for Tenebrionidae (Martins et al, 2010) and an attractant for Carabidae (Evans, 1988); and cis ‐jasmone is an attractant of Scarabaeidae (Dötterl, David, Boland, Silberbauer‐Gottsberger, & Gottsberger, 2012; Loughrin, Potter, & Hamilton‐Kemp, 1998), and is also found in the floral scent of X ylopia benthamii , which is pollinated by Nitidulidae and Staphylinidae (Jürgens, Webber, & Gottsberger, 2000). Likewise, a few isomers of the alkenes retrieved in our analyses have been reported as semiochemical components for honey bees, viz.…”

“…Consistent with earlier studies of other Tenebrionids, the chemical constituents of the defensive secretions of U. dermestoides were determined to contain 1,4-benzoquinones, and long-chain 1-alkenes (11, 127-129 in Fig. 20 ) along with other, minor constituents, including limonene ( Eisner et al ., 2005 ; Francke and Dettner, 2005 ; Villaverde et al ., 2009 ; Martins et al ., 2010 ). Tests of extracts from U. dermestoides and closely related species, along with some of the individual compounds that make up the defensive secretions, have shown a wide-range of bioactivities, including cytotoxicity ( Crespo et al ., 2011 ), anti-diabetes ( Jasso-Villagomez et al ., 2018 ), anti-senility ( Yan et al ., 2009 ), anticoagulatory ( Wu et al ., 1996 ), and anti-asthma/anti-inflammatory (Wahrendorf and Wink, 2006; Santos et al ., 2010 ).…”
