Evidence for transfer followed by breakup in 7Li+65Cu

Abstract.Role of cluster structures of 7 Li on reaction dynamics have been studied by performing exclusive measurements of prompt-γ rays from residues with scattered particles at energy, E/Vb = 1.6, with 198 Pt target. Yields of the residues resulting after capture of t and 4,5,6 He, corresponding to different excitation energies of the composite system were estimated. The results were compared with three body classical-dynamical model for breakup fusion, constrained by the measured fusion, α and t capture cross-sections. The cross-section of residues from capture of α and t agreed well with the prediction of the model showing dominance of the two step processbreakup fusion, while those from tightly bound 6 He showed massive transfer to be the dominant mechanism.

Studies at the Australian National University aim to distinguish breakup of the projectile like-nucleus that occurs when approaching the target from that when receding from the target. Helped by breakup simulations, observables have been found that are sensitive to the breakup location, and thus to the mean-lives of unbound states; sensitivity to even sub-zeptosecond lifetime is found. These results provide insights to understand the reaction dynamics of weakly bound nuclei at near barrier energies.Understanding the interactions of weakly bound nuclei, and their reaction outcomes, is a key challenge in nuclear reactions research [1]. For well-bound nuclei, collisions near the barrier are reasonably well-described by including couplings to quantum states of the approaching nuclei. For weakly bound nuclei, the reaction dynamics has added complexity due the presence of low-lying particle unbound states. Abstract. Experiments with weakly-bound nuclei have demonstrated that breakup significantly affects the reaction outcomes. Coincidence measurements of breakup fragments at sub-barrier energies, using a position sensitive back-angle detector array covering 117• to 167• , have enabled the complete characterisation of the breakup processes in the reactions of the weakly-bound 6,7 Li with 208 Pb. The timescales of different breakup processes were also extracted from the fragments kinematics, enabling a clear characterization of prompt and delayed breakup. The majority of these prompt breakup events are triggered by n-stripping for 6 Li, and p-pickup for 7 Li. The demonstration that the reaction dynamics and outcomes can be significantly determined not only by the properties of the two colliding nuclei, but by the ground-state and excited state properties of their neighbours, is a key insight for understanding and predicting reactions of weakly-bound nuclei near the limits of nuclear existence.
