Evidence for wave coupling in type III emissions

Abstract: [1] Using new capabilities of waveform analyses provided by the S/WAVES instruments onboard the two STEREO spacecraft, we present for the first time a complete set of direct evidence for three-wave coupling occurring during a type III emission and involving two Langmuir waves and an ion acoustic wave. Information on the Doppler-shifted frequencies and especially the phases of the waves are used in order to check first the conservation of momentum and energy, through Fourier analyses, and second the phase locki… Show more

“…According to the nonlinear conversion of Langmuir waves, type III radio emissions are expected to result from the decay of Langmuir waves. Evidence for electrostatic parametric decay were provided by Henri et al [2009]. Evidence of in situ observations of electrostatic parametric decay are also provided in this paper.…”

“…As the density decreases with the distance to the Sun, the plasma frequency decreases, and the type III exhibits their characteristic time-frequency drift. Several wave conversion processes have been discussed from linear mode conversion in inhomogeneous density profiles [Field, 1956;Kim et al, 2008;Schleyer et al, 2013] to nonlinear processes including nonlinear beam instability [Yoon, 1995], wave coupling (electrostatic parametric decay [Cairns, 1987b;Henri et al, 2009], or electromagnetic coupling [Cairns, 1987a]). …”

“…The in situ wave measurements have shown some signatures of the ESD in type III bursts (Lin et al, 1986;Gurnett et al, 1993;Hospodarsky and Gurnett, 1995;Thejappa and MacDowall, 1998;Thejappa et al, 2003;Henri et al, 2009). The high time resolution observations from the Fast Envelope Sampler (FES) of the ULYSSES/URAP experiment have provided some evidence for the strong Langmuir turbulence processes in type III burst sources (Kellogg et al, 1992;Thejappa et al, 1993Thejappa et al, , 1996Thejappa et al, , 1999MacDowall, 1998, 2004).…”

“…From the observational point of view, numerous works have been devoted to test the validity of this model (Lin et al, 1981(Lin et al, , 1986Gurnett et al, 1993;Thejappa et al, 1993;Cairns, 1995;Thejappa et al, 2003). New evidence of such wave coupling processes have been recently provided from the analysis of waveform data from the STEREO/WAVES experiment (Henri et al, 2009). Since the phase of the waves are available from such measurements, it is possible to test the energy and momentum conservation laws induced by such coupling.…”
