-A very acidic soil under an adult spruce (Picea abies) stand, in the Basses-Vosges (North-eastern France), was analysed in 1986, and ten years later in 1996. The chemical composition of the mineral horizons did not show much variation, but the sum of exchangeable Ca and Mg in the mineral horizons and their total contents in the OL, OF and OH horizons decreased significantly. In ten years, the Mg in particular had decreased by about 30 kg·ha -1 , i.e. about 1.7% per year of the exchangeable Mg present in 1986. This decrease, which is worrying for the future, may be explained by peaks of humus mineralisation during warm summers combined with the inability of the mineral horizons, highly saturated in aluminium, to retain Ca and Mg coming from this mineralisation in the organic horizons. As a result, these elements were lost in drainage water instead of being taken up by the roots. As this soil was poor in weatherable minerals, the loss could not be compensated for by mineral decomposition. It is probable that a similar situation occurs at the end of a forest rotation when organic horizons are exposed to light and heat. Thus, the degradation of the humus from mull to dysmoder, followed by mineralisation, together with a high exchangeable Al content in mineral horizons and acid rain, all lead to losses of Mg and secondarily Ca at different stages of development of forest stands on acidic soils. La composition chimique des horizons minéraux n'a que peu varié, mais la somme du calcium et du magnésium échangeables des horizons minéraux et totaux des horizons OL, OF et OH a diminué significativement, surtout celle de Mg qui a baissé de 30 kg·ha -1 en dix ans, soit environ 1,7 % par an du magnésium échangeable présent en 1986. Cette diminution, préoccupante pour l'avenir, peut s'expliquer par un pic de minéralisation de l'humus pendant les étés chauds combiné avec l'incapacité des horizons minéraux, fortement saturés en aluminium, à retenir le calcium et le magnésium provenant de la minéralisation des couches d'humus. Ces éléments sont donc perdus par drainage au lieu d'être prélevés par les racines. Dans ce sol, pauvre en minéraux altérables, cette perte ne peut pas être compensée par l'altération. Une telle situation se produit certainement aussi en fin de révolution, lorsque les horizons humifères sont exposés à la lumière et à la chaleur. Impacts from acidic deposition on stream water quality in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park (GRSM) have long been reported; however, a better understanding of the biogeochemical processes that regulate stream acidification is needed for resource management. Water quality monitoring of Noland Divide Watershed (NDW), a high-elevation watershed in the GRSM, was used to generate an ion input-output budget in order to evaluate what processes have influenced stream pH and acid neutralizing capacity (ANC) over the long term. NDW was equipped with wet deposition, throughfall, soil lysimeters, and stream collection stations, and monitoring began in 1991 and continues to the present. Using data from 1991 to 2006, this study found annual deposition fluxes of SO 4 2− and NO 3 − averaged 1,735 and 863 eq ha −1 year −1 , respectively. Data indicated that 61% of the net SO 4 2− entering the watershed was retained, suggesting soil adsorption dominates as a biogeochemical process. Although net SO 4 2− retention was observed, SO 4 2− appeared to move rapidly through NDW during large precipitation events causing stream acidification, as evidenced by significant inverse correlations between biweekly throughfall SO 4 2− flux and stream event pH and ANC. Nitrogen uptake by forest vegetation and nitrification play key roles in regulating NO 3 − export to the stream as observed by 32% retention of net inorganic nitrogen, and 96% of NH 4 + input was converted to NO 3 − in the uppermost soil horizon. Net export of base cations (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + ) is observed and apparently moderates stream acidification. In contrast, 71% of net K + input was retained, which is likely due to forest vegetation uptake. Net export of Ca 2+ was 867 eq ha −1 year −1 compared to net throughfall of 790 eq ha −1 year −1 . Long-term cation depletion from the NDW soils could limit recovery potential in stream water quality. Findings from this NDW study suggest that future stream acidification conditions in high-elevation GRSM watersheds are dependent on interrelated biogeochemical processes and precipitation patterns, illustrating the need to better understanding potential impacts of climate variability on stream water quality.

Elevated Aluminium Concentration in Acidified Headwater Streams Lowers Aquatic Hyphomycete Diversity and Impairs Leaf-Litter Breakdown

Aquatic hyphomycetes play an essential role in the decomposition of allochthonous organic matter which is a fundamental process driving the functioning of forested headwater streams. We studied the effect of anthropogenic acidification on aquatic hyphomycetes associated with decaying leaves of Fagus sylvatica in six forested headwater streams (pH range, 4.3-7.1). Non-metric multidimensional scaling revealed marked differences in aquatic hyphomycete assemblages between acidified and reference streams. We found strong relationships between aquatic hyphomycete richness and mean Al concentration (r = -0.998, p < 0.0001) and mean pH (r = 0.962, p < 0.002), meaning that fungal diversity was severely depleted in acidified streams. By contrast, mean fungal biomass was not related to acidity. Leaf breakdown rate was drastically reduced under acidic conditions raising the issue of whether the functioning of headwater ecosystems could be impaired by a loss of aquatic hyphomycete species.
