Evidence of Olfactory Imprinting at an Early Life Stage in Pink Salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha)

Abstract: Pacific salmon (Oncorhynchus spp.) navigate towards spawning grounds using olfactory cues they imprinted on as juveniles. The timing at which imprinting occurs has been studied extensively, and there is strong evidence that salmon imprint on their natal water during the parr-smolt transformation (PST). Researchers have noted, however, that the life histories of some species of Pacific salmon could necessitate imprinting prior to the PST. Juvenile pink salmon (O. gorbuscha) spend less time in fresh water than a… Show more

“…In salmon, where olfactory imprinting occurs (Bett et al, 2016), TH peak at the onset of the CP for memory formation (Lema and Nevitt, 2004). This has not been directly linked to experience-dependent behavioral plasticity, but T4 and T3 control cellular proliferation within the olfactory epithelium during the sensitive period (Lema and Nevitt, 2004).…”

“…There is more recent evidence that some species of Pacific salmon, e.g. juvenile pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and others, can imprint prior to the PST at a very young age (Bett et al, 2016;Dittman et al, 2015). Bett et al (2016) published an excellent review on olfactory imprinting and olfactory guided navigation during spawning migrations in different salmon species and lampreys, elucidating imprinting cues and underlying mechanisms.…”

Bett et al (2016) published an excellent review on olfactory imprinting and olfactory guided navigation during spawning migrations in different salmon species and lampreys, elucidating imprinting cues and underlying mechanisms. However, there is also evidence that salmon imprint magnetically on their home area and this most likely brings them close to the home stream, with olfactory cues used mainly in the final part of the spawning migration (Putman et al, 2014(Putman et al, , 2013.…”
