“…When active acute or chronic infections coincide with pregnancy, the conditions also exist for the possible transplacental passage of both organ ism-ret a ted antigens and high litres of specific antibodies to the developing fetus. These situations have been previously described in chronic human schistosomiasis [11][12][13][14]. Positive anti-schistosomal in vitro and in vivo cellmediated responses have been observed in uninfecled children of infected mothers [15.…”

“…We consider these responses indicative of the presence in CBMC of babies from infeeted mothers of antiidiotype T eells thought to have expanded in utero due to idiotypie exposure throtigh IgG antibodies that erossed the placenta [35]. Speeifie IgG levels observed in the sera of ehronieally infected patients are comparable to those levels deteeted in the cord blood sera of neonates of infected mothers [II, 12,14]. These placcntally transferred IgG antibodies ean be assumed to eonlain both antibodies lo sehistosomal antigens expressing idiotypes and some expressing antiidiotypes speeitie for these antibodies.…”

“…In chronic, endemic infections with high levels of prevalence during the child-bearing years, such as schistosomiasis and Chagas' disease, active antibody production by infected, gravid women leads to considerable placental transfer of antibodies against the antigens of the infecting organism (8)(9)(10). We have predicted (11) that the Ids expressed on these transferred maternal antibodies could influence the responsiveness and subsequent morbidity expressed by their children, if they eventually become infected.…”

“…However, since only IgG and IgA antibodies are known to be transferred in utero or in milk, it is possible that our failure to demonstrate the neonatal passive transfer of immunity was due to the second alternative and that the protective antibody was not transf err able. In this respect it is interesting to note that Jordan & Goatly (1963), Gelfand et al (1964), Lees & Jordan (1968) and Hillyer et al (1970) have all demonstrated by serological tests that specific antibodies against S. mansoni are transferred transplacentally in man and Hillyer et al (1970) have shown that serum IgG is apparently responsible for this transfer.…”
