Evolution and Driving Mechanisms of the Integrated Development of Traditional and New Infrastructure: Evidence From China

Abstract

Promoting the integration of traditional and new infrastructure to establish a coordinated modern infrastructure system is crucial for promoting high‐quality economic development. Using provincial‐level panel data, this study employs the entropy method, coupling coordination degree model, and spatial econometric models to investigate spatial–temporal trends and driving mechanisms of the integrated development of traditional and new infrastructure in China from 2008 to 2020. The findings reveal that while the overall development level of China's traditional and new infrastructure has steadily improved, it remains relatively low. Second, the integrated development of traditional and new infrastructure remains in the middle‐ and low‐integration stages. Third, spatial analysis highlights a significant positive correlation in integrated development across regions, forming a semi‐enclosed spatial distribution pattern. Finally, urbanization, informatization, industrial structure, government management, and technological innovation are important mechanisms driving the integrated development of traditional and new infrastructure. Our research provides a foundation for policies aimed at advancing infrastructure integration and fostering regional economic coordination.
