Evolution of BIM: epistemology, genesis and division into periods

Andrzej Szymon Borkowski

Abstract: There is no consensus among BIM practitioners and theorists as to whether BIM is an evolution from CAD systems or a total revolution in construction. In the history of BIM, there have been a number of important, epoch-making events that have changed the direction of BIM. From the concept of BIM, to the technology used in construction, to the methodology, to the process, to the holistic idea of BIM, one can see the evolution of user approaches to its use. BIM has two dimensions: an information system and a phil… Show more

“…Therefore, BIM is more than just a construction tool-it represents a revolutionary philosophy. In Borkowski's study [7], the history of BIM was periodized according to three factors: idea, approach, and organizational culture. The numerous benefits of BIM have been demonstrated in a variety of applications, from its use in sustainability concepts [8] to its critical role in the public sector [9].…”

“…Unlike the static 2D drawings, BIM models are dynamic, serving as a relational database that stores all information regarding building objects throughout their lifecycle. This comprehensive repository of data supports informed decision-making throughout the entire project lifecycle, from initial design to final demolition [7].…”

“…Building Information Modelling is "the process of generating, storing, managing, exchanging, and sharing building information in an interoperable and reusable way" [4], and with real-time simulation models and also artificial intelligence is Digital Twin. The next step towards which the technological transformation in the AEC seems to be heading is iBIM [5], that is integrated BIM, a common, interoperable, interdisciplinary model, holistic, used throughout the whole life cycle of built asset. ICT is innovative and changeable over time, so information from previous publications is often outdated.…”
