Transport enables trade between people, which is essential for the development of civilizations. Transport is a crucial necessity for specialization, allowing production and consumption of products to occur at different locations. High-speed rail (HSR) allows the flow of people between regions, cities, countries. With rapid global development in HSR technology for passenger transportation, it plays a vital role in transportation systems. The improvement of the quality of cities with different emphasis will bring different economic development results. Therefore, exploring the impact of high-speed railways and quality of place on economic development is necessary. This paper takes the prefecture-level city with a high-speed railway opened in 2008–2013 as the research sample and takes other prefecture-level cities in the country as the control group. The study findings revealed that employment, investment in fixed assets, average wage, and higher education institute significantly affect China’s regional economic growth. Institute of higher education reflects the negative effect on the regional economic growth whereas the employment, investment in fixed assets, and average wage rate positively impact it. Based on the results, it can be concluded that China’s regional economy is significantly affected by its quality.

As electric power systems increasingly integrate Renewable Energy Sources (RESs), the consequent reduction in system inertia has heightened their sensitivity to disturbances, such as sudden load changes. This issue is especially relevant in railway power supply systems, which are evolving to be dominated by RESs. Traditional solutions, including Railway Power Conditioners (RPCs), primarily address unbalanced loads and reactive power compensation but offer limited frequency support. This paper introduces a Virtual Inertia-Integrated Railway Power Conditioner (VIIRPC), a novel solution that enhances traditional RPCs with Energy Storage Systems (ESS) to provide critical virtual inertia support, thereby addressing the critical gap in frequency stability amidst the evolving energy landscape of railway systems. Utilizing a current source-based model, the VIIRPC effectively extends inertia support from two-phase systems to balanced three-phase systems at the Point of Common Coupling (PCC). This achievement is realized by dividing a virtual inertia signal and integrating it into both sides of the RPC control loop, while respecting each side's signal orientation. Simulations have been conducted to verify the operation under different loading conditions, including a 4-minute headway train schedule, under both conventional and low-inertia grid conditions. These results demonstrate that the VIIRPC outperforms traditional RPCs by enhancing frequency stability and maintaining conventional functionalities. This advancement is particularly significant for modern, RES-dominated railway power supplies, especially in remote areas with RES-based power sources and low short-circuit levels at the PCC. The “wind tunnel” approach is applied to study high-speed train aerodynamics in a railway tunnel using FDS software. The main focus of the research is on the pressure distribution along the tunnel. Proven analytical dependencies based on the experimental observations for air jet centerline velocity and flow entrainment are used to evaluate the model setup. A model verification is carried out based on the pressure drop calculations due to viscous effects where the impact of the surface roughness and the tunnel length are also considered. A sensitivity analysis is performed to evaluate changes in input FDS parameters and to explore interactions between them. It is proposed to use the standard deviation, obtained from the calculated time-averaged pressure values, to specify the appropriate numeric parameter combinations, e.g. DT and PRESSURE_TOLERANCE, considering the desired results consistency and the computational time consumed. The simulated cases with and without a train inside a tunnel provide data on the aerodynamic characteristics of the models. The obtained volumetric and cross-sectional profiles for pressure and airflow velocity distribution form the basis for an informed decision regarding the tunnel design or safety solutions, for example, defining areas under maximal and minimal pressure loads. The analysis displays the necessity to carefully manage each investigated case considering the FDS features and limitations that largely affect a model setup and calculations.
