AbstractIn insect species like Drosophila melanogaster, the ability to evolve greater resistance or evolution of certain traits under specific environmental conditions leads to energy trade-offs with other important life-history traits. A number of studies from multiple fields have documented the life-history associated cost. However, no known studies have assessed the life-history associated cost with evolved reproductive traits and increase egg viability in cold shock selected population. To explore this, we used replicate populations of D. melanogaster that have evolved reproductive traits and egg viability in response to increased resistance to non lethal cold shock. To assess life-history cost; we measured longevity, life time fecundity, Larvae to adults development time, and larvae to adults survival. We found that there were no significant differences in longevity, life time fecundity, larvae to adults survival, and male body weight between the selected and control populations. However, selected populations have significantly longer pre adults developmental time compared to their control population. Females from the selected populations were bigger in size compared to the control populations. These findings suggest that there is no life-history cost associated with the evolution of greater resistance in the aspect of faster recovery of egg viability and reproductive traits post cold-shock. It quite possible the cost of the evolution of reproductive traits and egg viability in response to cold shock resistant is paid in terms of reduced resistance to other stresses

Notwithstanding recent evidences, paternal environment is thought to be a potential but unlikely source of fitness variation that can affect trait evolution. Here we studied intergenerational effects of males’ exposure to varying adult density in Drosophila melanogasterlaboratory populations. We held sires at normal (N), medium (M) and high (H) adult densities for 2 days before allowing them to mate with virgin females. This treatment did not introduce selection through differential mortality. Further, we randomly paired males and females and allowed a single round of mating between the sires and the dams. We then collected eggs from the dams and measured the egg size. Finally, we investigated the effect of the paternal treatment on juvenile and adult (male) fitness components. We found a significant treatment effect on juvenile competitive ability where the progeny sired by the H‐males had higher competitive ability. Since we did not find the treatment to affect egg size, this effect is unlikely to be mediated through variation in female provisioning. Male fitness components were also found to have a significant treatment effect: M‐sons had lower dry weight at eclosion, higher mating latency, and lower competitive mating success. While being the first study to show both adaptive and non‐adaptive effect of the paternal density in Drosophila, our results highlight the importance of considering paternal environment as important source of fitness variation.

The ability to thermal adaptation can involve altering the reproductive traits and physiologic response. In insects, it reported that the higher levels expression of Heat shock proteins (Hsps) and Frost (Fst) genes during the recovery phase of cold shock and suggested higher levels of expression of these genes help repair the injury caused by cold stress. The changes in the lipids, trehalose, and glycogen can also protect from cold stress. Therefore, we examined the levels of lipid and expression patterns of Hsps and Frost genes under cold stress or the benign condition in the populations of Drosophila melanogaster selected for increased resistance to cold shock. We observed the significant up-regulation of Hsp22, Hsp23, Hsp40, Hsp68and Fst genes in both the FSB and FCB populations during the recovery phase post-cold stress compared to the no shock condition. However, we did not find a significant change in the transcript levels of these genes between FSB and FCB under both the cold stress or under the benign condition. Additionally, we noticed the higher levels of total lipid levels in the females cold shock treated compared to no shock treated females. Suggesting that cold selected populations have different mechanisms to sustain cold stress.
