Evolution of the Converged NGN Service Platforms Towards Future Networks

Abstract: This article presents a comparison of main characteristics of the Next Generation Networks (NGN) and Future Generation Internet (FGI). The aim is to discuss and compare two approaches to Future Networks (FN) and services: the evolution of NGN, and the revolutionary approach of a new FGI. We present both frameworks from the services point of view as they are delivered to the end-user, as well as from the architectural point of view. We compare selected properties of both approaches to explain commonalities and … Show more

“…The NGN devices transmit packets over the network initially predetermined for voice transmission, but now the Carrier Ethernet encapsulates all TDM services in its frames. Of course, the price for this is solving synchronization problems and clock distribution, as well enabling appropriate quality of service (QoS) for TDM services transversing through Ethernet networks, which adds another degree of freedom or uncertainty in this regard [8].…”

“…The migration to NGN has shown to be an evolutionary rather than a revolutionary transition, which has generated a significant impact on the signaling [3]. As signaling is a starting point of the network's evolution, this section reviews its origins and purpose along with the transmission requirements.…”

“…The appropriate signaling and session control layer need to be implemented in the NGN to offer highly available signaling with the reliability and scalability of SS7 network. These requirements present an opportunity to introduce IP Multimedia Subsystem (IMS) technology in the NGN requiring the interoperability and integration of different technologies and protocols as the networks evolve [3].…”

“…Today, the Next Generation Networks (NGN) [3], [14] are considered to be a "usercentric" approach in the economic and technological world. Thanks to this new concept, the user can use any access to services and any terminal.…”
