Evolution of the limpet Patella candei d’Orbigny (Mollusca, Patellidae) in Atlantic archipelagos: human intervention and natural processes

Abstract: The genetic and morphological structure of Patella candei in the Macaronesian Islands were studied by allozyme electrophoresis and multivariate analysis (canonical discriminant analysis), respectively. Sixteen enzymes, yielding 21 resolvable loci were analysed for all populations using the BIOSYS‐1 program. A disjunct distribution of genetically similar populations from the Azores and Selvagens Islands (P.c. gomesii–P.c. candei) was found, which showed two diagnostic loci with P.c. ordinaria from Madeira. Pate… Show more

“…Generation of robust morphological data is particularly relevant to the taxonomy of P. candei for which early morphological patterns prompted the description of four geographically distinct subspecies (P. c. gomesi in Azores; P. c. ordinaria in Madeira, P. c. candei in Selvagens, and P. c. crenata in Canaries (Christiaens, 1973). However, subsequent studies have disagreed with various aspects of this taxonomy and it remains controversial (Côrte-Real et al, 1996a,b;Weber and Hawkins, 2002;Sá-Pinto et al, 2008).…”

“…Among patellids, which have been subject to genetic investigation, a geographical divergence has also been recognized between archipelagoes but has been given taxonomic recognition at the subspecific rather than the specific level (Coˆrte-Real, Hawkins & Thorpe, 1996a,b;Weber & Hawkins, 2002). Whether the differentiation here recorded in insular Clelandella actually deserves specific status (i.e.…”

“…The subspecies P. candei gomesii is endemic to the Azores (Titselaar, 1998;Weber and Hawkins, 2002), occurring subtidally and in mid and high shores, especially on boulders (Côrte-Real et al, 1996;Hawkins, et al 2000). Within the Azorean archipelago, this subspecies is morphologically plastic occurring as two habitat morphs: the "smooth limpet" and the "fly limpet".…”
