“…The capacity to simulate experiences that might occur in one's personal future is potentially adaptive because it allows individuals to mentally "try out" different versions of how an event might play out (Buckner & Carroll, 2007;Ingvar, 1979;Gilbert & Wilson, 2007;Suddendorf & Corballis, 2007;Tulving, 2005). During the past few years, research in my lab and others has documented striking similarities between remembering the past and imagining the future (for reviews, see Schacter, Addis, & Buckner, 2007, 2008Szpunar, 2010).
