The West African coastal population and ecosystems are increasingly exposed to a multitude of hazards. These are likely to be exacerbated by global climate change and direct impacts from local human activities. Our ability to understand coastal changes has been limited by an incomplete understanding of the processes and the difficulty of obtaining detailed data. Recent advances in satellite techniques have made it possible to obtain rich coastal data sets that provide a solid foundation for improving climate change adaptation strategies for humanity and increasing the resilience of ecosystems for sustainable development. In this article, we review West African coastal layout and current socio-environmental challenges together with key parameters that can be monitored and several coastal management programs that rely on satellite techniques to monitor indicators at the regional level. The social, technical and scientific problems and difficulties that hinder the interest of coastal practitioners and decision-makers to use the satellite data are identified. We provide a roadmap to precisely respond to these difficulties and on how an improved satellite earth observation strategy can better support future coastal zone management in West Africa.

This study assessed the concentration of As, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, V, Sr, Y, Nb, Zr, Cl, TS, TiO 2 , MnO, CaO and P 2 O 5 in the mangrove sediment and R. racemosa samples from Choba, Ogbogoro and Isaka in Niger Delta, Nigeria. A total of 6 sediment and 9 R. racemosa samples were collected using the simple random sampling. Two core sediment samples of 10 cm depth and three R. racemosa leave, stem and root samples were collected from each of the sampled locations. Both the sediment and R. racemosa samples were oven dried, powdered, made into briquettes and analyzed using XRF. The results showed contrasting heavy metal concentrations in the sediments and R. racemosa. As, Pb, Cu, Ni, Y, Nb and Zr had higher concentrations in the sediments while the concentrations of Zn, Sr, Cl, TS, MnO, CaO and P 2 O 5 were more in R. racemosa tissue. However, Cr, V and TiO 2 which had relatively high concentrations in the sediments were not detected in R. racemosa. Graphical analyses revealed a correlation between concentrations in sediment and R. racemosa as well as a similar pattern of heavy metal concentrations in the R. racemosa leaves, stems and roots in Choba, Ogbogoro and Isaka. But variations were found in the leaf/stem and leaf/root upward transport relationship. Most heavy metals were found to concentrate in R. racemosa roots while the least concentrations were found in the leaves.

We studied the impacts of Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) on the sedimentation regimes in the downstream-linked two largest Chinese freshwater lakes, Lake Dongting and Lake Poyang. Our results indicate that up to 1.73 × 109 t sediment was retained in TGR from June 2003 to December 2014. This resulted in a 145.9 × 106 t yr−1 decline in the suspended sediment load at Zhicheng and a 16.8 × 106 t yr−1 lower sediment flow from Yangtze River to Lake Dongting, which partially explains the 13.4 × 106 t yr−1 lower sedimentation in Lake Dongting during the post-TGR period. Furthermore, TGR resulted in a 0.5 ± 0.3 m reduction of the multi-year mean water level at the Lake Poyang outlet Hukou, accelerating the suspended sediment export discharge from the lake. The reduced sedimentation in Lake Poyang during the post-TGR period was estimated to 6.3 × 106 t yr−1. We estimate that a monthly mean concentration of sediment flow from TGR below 0.60 kg m−3 will lead to erosion in Lake Dongting and Lake Poyang. Better regulation of TGR may extend the life expectancy of the two vanishing large lakes.
