Celem artykułu jest oszacowanie liczby i struktury pracujących oraz bazy ekonomicznej miast w Polsce. Wynika to z niewystarczającej statystyki publicznej, w tym zwłaszcza braków na niższych poziomach agregacji (gmina), w grupie podmiotów poniżej 10 pracujących oraz lokalizacji części miejsc pracy według miejsca zamieszkania. Powoduje to duże utrudnienia w dokonywaniu najbardziej podstawowych badań i analiz, m.in. związanych z rozwojem społeczno-ekonomicznym miast. Dlatego też podjęto próbę opracowania algorytmu, umożliwiającego oszacowanie miejsc pracy w gminach na podstawie dostępnych danych w statystyce GUS. Dane te w niniejszym artykule zestawiono według miast i w podziale na 5 podstawowych grup sekcji PKD według stanu na 2016 rok. Następnie dokonano oszacowania nadwyżki pracujących w miastach, zgodnie z koncepcją bazy ekonomicznej i jej podziału na część endogeniczną i egzogeniczną. Badanie jest rozszerzeniem części projektu, wykonanego dla sześciu samorządów wojewódzkich w 2019 roku (Śleszyński i in., 2019a). Jakkolwiek zdawać sobie należy sprawę, że wyniki są szacunkowe, to jednak dane te są bardziej przybliżone do rzeczywistości od podawanych w statystyce publicznej. Dlatego jednym z celów jest możliwość szerokiego upowszechnienia algorytmu i wyników dla prowadzenia badań naukowych oraz potrzeb praktycznych, w tym przez instytucje samorządu terytorialnego i do artykułu załączony jest link do pobrania danych w arkuszu kalkulacyjnym.

This research deals with the presence and potential of the manufacturing industry in the urban settlements of Łódzkie Voivodeship. Its cognitive goal is to recognise the present share of industry in the economic and functional base of those settlements that, as a result of the system transformation, underwent restructuring and deindustrialisation, and the shrinking of its economic base. The re-development of this base and functions, appropriate to the role of towns and cities in the settlement system, requires new paths and indicating them is the application objective of the research. The work is based on the theory of the economic base of settlements, using statistical and cartographic methods including ‘heat maps’ as well as ‘employment surplus’ and the Amemiya indicator. Studies have shown that both economic and industrial potential are concentrated in the urban settlements of the Łódź agglomeration but decrease especially towards the south and south-east, and that traditional sectors still dominate. Despite intensive deindustrialisation, industry still plays a significant role in the economic base and functions of most small and medium towns of the voivodeship, as well as parts of some large urban settlements. Further economic development, and the role in it of small and medium towns depends on their further industrialisation or re-industrialisation, while of large and medium urban centres – on knowledge-based services.

Structural transformations that have been taking place in Poland since the 1990s triggered important changes in demographic and economic urban structures. Poland’s opening to global processes brought Polish society to the stage of modern demographic development which has produced changes in, among others, vital statistics and spatial mobility of the country’s residents. Systemic and structural transformation of the country at the early stages has significantly undermined its economy, in particular, in urban centres. Very much needed restructuring of urban economies resulted in the closure or bankruptcy of many enterprises. The economic function of towns and cities and their demographic structure have changedprofoundly, exerting a mutual impact on each other. The paper is based on the assumption that there is a relationship between demographic changes in towns and cities and the urban economic base. Its goal is to identify the impact exerted by demographic changes on the economy of investigated towns. The problem is illustrated with cases of towns and cities in Łódź Voivodeship (territorial units with the city status as on 1 January 2018). The research time frame spanned 1995 and 2017.
