EXAFS Study on Structural Change of Charcoal-supported Ruthenium Catalysts during Lignin Gasification in Supercritical Water

Abstract: Lignin gasification in supercritical water over charcoal supported ruthenium trivalent salts was studied using a batch reactor at 673 K. Ruthenium (III) nitrosyl nitrate on charcoal (Ru(NO)(NO 3 ) 3 /C) was more active than ruthenium (III) chloride on charcoal (RuCl 3 /C) for the gasification reaction. EXAFS analysis revealed that ruthenium metal particles were formed in both RuCl 3 /C and Ru(NO)(NO 3 ) 3 /C catalysts during the lignin gasification and that the size of ruthenium metal in Ru(NO)(NO 3 ) 3 /C was… Show more

“…The finding of metallic ruthenium is further in agreement with reports on the catalytic gasification of lignin by Ketchie et al [35] and Ya maguchi et al [36,37] However, these findings are in contradiction to the report of Park and Tomiyasu, [38] who proposed a mechanism with a redox couple Ru +4 /Ru +2 (i.e. RuO 2 / RuO) for the hydrothermal gasification over unsupported RuO 2 .…”

“…Lignin model compounds were decomposed in a batch reactor made of stainless steel 316 tube with an inner volume of 6.0 cm 3 in the similar method for lignin gasification in our papers383940. In a typical catalytic reaction, 0.15 g of the catalyst, 0.10 g of lignin model compounds, and 3.0 g of water were added to the reactor.…”
