Examination of Clinical Efficacy of Keishibukuryogan on Non-Specific Complaints Associated with Varicose Veins of the Lower Extremity

Abstract: The subjective symptoms of varicose veins of the lower extremity often include malaise, numbness, coldness, pain, and pruritus of the lower extremity, and relieving these complaints is important in managing the quality of life of patients. We have examined the clinical efficacy of keishibukuryogan, a Kampo prescription for improving oketsu (impaired microcirculation, congestion), on non-specific complaints associated with varicose veins of the lower extremity. Keishibukuryogan was administered to 30 patients w… Show more

“…Therefore, easier and more effective therapies, including pharmacotherapies for pocket hematoma, are sought. Keishibukuryogan is a low-cost drug and conventional Japanese formula that improves impaired microcirculation ( 8 ). It has been reported that keishibukuryogan was useful for improving the skin perfusion pressure and discomfort associated with varicose veins of the lower extremities ( 8 ), and consequently, keishibukuryogan was expected help reduce pocket hematoma, probably via vasodilation of the arterioles, increased blood velocity, and resolution of erythrocyte congestion in relation to enhanced endothelial nitric oxide production ( 5 ).…”

“… 6 Blood stasis indicates severe disease. 8 , 9 However, since a precise concept of blood stasis from the standpoint of Western medicine has yet to be established, 10 an objective standard for diagnosis of blood stasis is useful and needed not only for Western medicine practitioners but also for oriental medicine practitioners.…”

“…Moreover, blood stasis indicates poor prognosis and severe disease. 8 , 9 Therefore, it is very important to increase diagnosis accuracy of blood stasis and forge an objective standard for diagnosis of blood stasis. We hypothesized that a combination of Fuku shin and Zetsu shin increases diagnosis accuracy.…”

“…Keishibukuryogan inhibited platelet aggregation in guinea pig whole blood has been reported ( Terawaki et al, 2015 ). In clinical studies, keishibukuryogan was reported to lower blood viscosity, to improve intra-vascular erythrocyte aggregation ( Itoh et al, 1992 ), and to improve the symptoms of patients with non-specific complaints associated with varicose veins of the lower extremities ( Hayashi et al, 2014 ). TJ-125 is a Kampo preparation that includes the extract of coix seeds.…”
