Examination of Concurrent Exposure to Repeated Stress and Chlorpyrifos on Cholinergic, Glutamatergic, and Monoamine Neurotransmitter Systems in Rat Forebrain Regions

Abstract: Repeated stress has been reported to cause reversible impairment in the central nervous system (CNS). It was proposed that alterations in glutamatergic, cholinergic, and monoamine neurotransmitter systems after exposure to stress are initial CNS events contributing to this impairment and that exacerbation could occur with concurrent exposure to cholinesterase inhibitors. Effects of concurrent exposure to repeated stress and chlorpyrifos on activities of acetylcholinesterase (AChE), carboxylesterase, and cholin… Show more

“…In adult rats, an increase of serotonin in cerebral cortex was observed after the sc administration of 160 mg/kg of CPF (Pung et al 2006), but when CPF was administered in combination with stress, authors reported a reduction in serotonin content. In this context, a recent research of our group showed that serotonine decreased in the nucleus accumbens, 30 days after the sc administration of 250 mg/kg of CPF (Moreno et al 2008).…”

“…In the adult, concurrent stress augments the systemic toxicity and neurotoxicity of organophosphates (Basha and Poojary, 2011, 2012; Pung et al, 2006; Shaikh et al, 2003) but to our knowledge, there are no corresponding studies for stress in pregnancy. Here, the prenatal stressor was the surgical procedure to insert the minipumps.…”
