“…In a series of recent studies by Robert and Rachel Santos, a crime analysis approach akin to near repeat analysis has emerged to direct tactical police responses to micro-time hot spots, or crime "flare ups", of residential burglary and thefts from vehicles. This line of research comes from an ex post facto quasi-experimental study in Port St. Lucie, Florida where a micro-time hot spot was operationalized as (1) two or more crimes; (2) occurring from one to 14 days of another; and (3) within a .79 square mile radius (Santos & Santos, 2015a, 2015b, 2015c. The authors contend that micro-time hot spots are "… unpredictable, short in duration and, if left alone, will run its course and eventually end.…”

The national survey was conducted within the scope of a larger research project that also included focus groups and working groups with innovative police practitioners and a case study with one agency.…”

“…season when the crime occurred, or district in a city where the crime occurred) are sometimes used (compare, e.g. Santos and Santos 2015). However, transport crime is quite different from vehicle theft in general, and there does not appear to be any particular support in the literature to introduce similar control variables in a study that focuses on the specific crime types that are investigated here.…”
