A review of the literature presented during 2011 on manganese, technetium and rhenium chemistry is made in this chapter. The synthesis of novel compounds, complexes and clusters of these metals is reviewed and new observations and inferences are reported. Research highlights for each of the metals during the year are also given.
HighlightsA novel enneanuclear manganese-based single-molecule magnet containing an unusual [Mn 9 O 4 ] core and an unprecedented defective 'supertetrahedron' topology based on two parallel metallacrown subunits has been prepared. 13 Technetium dichloride has been reported for the first time. 67 The chloride exhibits a new structure type consisting of infinite chains of face sharing [Tc 2 Cl 8 ] rectangular prisms that are packed in a commensurate supercell. The longest excited state lifetime that has ever been observed for a Re(I)-based charge-transfer photoluminescent complex has been reported for a new Re(I)-carbonyl diimine complex. 82
ManganeseThe heterometallic hexanuclear manganese-lanthanide complexes [Mn III 2 Ln III 4 (m 4 -O) 2 (Hbemp) 2 (OMe) 2 (OAc) 8 ]ÁnH 2 O (Ln = Lu, n = 1; Tm, n = 5; H 3 bemp = 2,6-bis[N-(2-hydroxyethyl)iminomethyl]-4-methylphenol) have been prepared and found to exhibit antiferromagnetic interactions between metal centres. 1 Meanwhile, the novel manganese borophosphate (NH 4 ) 6 [Mn 3 B 6 P 9 O 36 (OH) 3 ]Á4H 2 O has been prepared and found to contain an unprecedented pentadecamer tetrahedral fundamental building unit. 2 The trinuclear manganese cluster [Mn 3 O(O 2 C-anth) 6 (HOCH 3 ) 3 ] (O 2 C-anth = 9-anthracenecarboxylate) has been synthesised and SQUID magnetometry measurements used to confirm antiferromagnetic coupling between the metal centres. 3 The magnetic behaviour of the large-spin trinuclear complex [Mn 3 (suc) 2 (ina) 2 ] n (suc = succinate, ina = isonicotinate) has also been probed, using neutron diffraction studies to determine its low-temperature crystal structure. 4 Elsewhere, solvothermal reactions have been used to synthesise unprecedented trinuclear and pentanuclear
