Examination of User Emotions and Task Performance in Indoor Space Design Using Mixed-Reality

Abstract: Given the COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting social distancing measures with inevitable telecommuting, capturing user emotions is essential as it affects both satisfaction and task performance. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to analyze emotions and task performance in terms of dislike and personalized decision-making in indoor spaces. To facilitate experiments with participants, a mixed-reality environment was utilized with the Pleasure, Arousal, Dominance (PAD) test and cognitive tests. The results… Show more

“…The authors of that study concluded that human aesthetic experience could be reduced to the three factors of familiarity, excitement, and fascination, partially overlapping with findings using images of interiors where fascination, coherence, and hominess were identified [101]. A different study varied the characteristics of indoor virtual environments (e.g., ceiling height, wall color, floor material) and recorded the users' responses [102].…”

“…Fourth, age may also be an important factor. In this study, the majority of participants were in their twenties and thirties, however their favorite place varied based on their age and task performance 5 , 19 . In the future, we intend to perform a complex analysis with similar early adherence and middle age propositions (35–64).…”

“…Furthermore, upon interpreting the research results, our study provides key insights into the effects of workplace characteristics on people by analyzing human states through both physiological and psychological lenses. This integrated approach provides key insights into the influence of architectural design on human well-being 1 , 5 , 19 . It is expected that the findings of the study can be applied to other studies on the creation of indoor space and what type of tasks can be performed efficiently with an increase in the number of telecommuting operations.…”
