Examining characteristics of descriptive phenomenological nursing studies: A scoping review

Abstract: Qualitative research methods have been receiving increasing recognition in healthcare and nursing research, as it seeks to understand a natural phenomenon through the emphasis on the meaning, views and experiences of participants (Al-Busaidi, 2008). As nurse researchers strive to develop knowledge that embraces the ideals of holistic nursing, it is essential for nurse researchers to understand human experiences in health and illness and explore the needs of both nurses, patients and other stakeholders (Wojnar & Show more

“…Finlay (2014) and Zahavi (2019) have further detailed some of the variations in the analysis process. In a recently published scoping review of descriptive phenomenology studies ( N = 103) in the nursing literature, Shorey and Ng (2022) found many methodological and quality issues within this body of work, which were incongruent with the philosophical ground upon which this method stands. Their findings speak to the complexity and skill needed to conduct this type of research.…”

“…In descriptive phenomenology, the researcher's objective is to obtain transcendental subjectivity (Lopez & Willis, 2004). It is described as a state in which the researcher's influence on the inquiry is continuously reviewed, and biases and presumptions are neutralized not to influence the subject being studied (Shorey & Ng, 2022). This study aimed to investigate the common experience of the millennial mom's information search stages in the decision-making process when choosing a birthplace.…”

“…Data triangulation was performed to establish a comprehensive understanding of an experience by comparing and exploring emerging concepts among the participants of different service providers (Fusch et al, 2018; Patton, 1999). Colaizzi's seven‐step phenomenological analysis method was performed to understand the essence of the shared experiences and perspectives (Shorey & Ng, 2022). However, because these steps should not be seen as a linear approach and could be applied flexibly by moving forward and backward between steps (McLeod, 2001; Sanders, 2003), Step 7 was brought forward to Step 4 to improve the response rate of member checking of initial codes since the participants were practising nurses with demanding schedules.…”
