“…Many studies show that one of the main reasons why people avoid non‐normative behaviour is the shame of being exposed to their immediate environment if they are caught. The fear of shame helps control behaviour and strengthens social conformity (Fitch & Nazaretian, 2019; Tignor & Colvin, 2017), prompting the question: Does parenthood reinforce the fear of being shamed?…”

“…Recent research found racial differences in the perception of teacher fairness (Pesta, 2021); it may be that gender differences exist as well. Other research demonstrates that females are more likely to accept the punishment and experience shame rather than defiance and therefore may work to regain their feminine identity which is at odds with labels such as "delinquent" and "troublemaker" (Fitch & Nazaretian, 2019). While labeling theory is certainly important for understanding the gender gap in the school-to-prison pipeline, this study suggests that a labeling via school bond perspective is better suited to understand gender differences in the pathway from school exclusion to serious delinquency.…”

“…Pertinent to this research is the lack of variables measuring student perceptions of the fairness of the punishment or their acknowledgement and/or acceptance of the punishment. If there are differences in the acceptance of punishment across gender which has been suggested by prior research (Fitch & Nazaretian, 2019), then measures of these concepts are imperative. In the future perhaps self-reports of behavior, punishment, and reactions could be compared to official data (disciplinary reports via school administration) to further identify misperceptions and biases in the sanctioning of students.…”
