Examining General Versus Condition-Specific Health-Related Quality of Life Across Weight Categories in an Adolescent Sample

Abstract: This study examined Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL) across weight categories in adolescents using both a general and a condition-specific measure sensitive to fatigue symptoms. Participants (N = 918) completed the Pediatric Quality of Life (PedsQL) Inventory and PedsQL Multidimensional Fatigue Scale measures. Actual height and weight were used to calculate body mass index-for-age and-sex percentiles and assign weight categories. “…Weight status was proposed as a separate moderator due to the large proportion of the literature pertaining to HRQOL and physical activity in youth who are overweight or obese. Similar to other chronic disease populations, youth with overweight/obesity consistently report lower global levels of HRQOL than healthy-weight peers (Dalton et al, 2015;Herman et al, 2014;Lacy et al, 2012;Morales et al, 2013;Swallen et al, 2005;Tsiros et al, 2009) and significant improvements in HRQOL following physical activity interventions (Finne et al, 2013;Knopfli et al, 2008). However, children with overweight/obesity may experience additional stressors (e.g.…”

“…Sex. Based on conflicting research about the impact of gender on both physical activity and HRQOL (Dalton et al, 2015;Ekelund et al, 2012;Herman et al, 2014;Lacy et al, 2012;Swallen et al, 2005;Kantor et al, 2015), sex was proposed as another potential moderator.…”

“…Although these studies unanimously concluded that girls report lower scores than boys, their results varied with regard to the specific subscales. Some studies reported sex differences in Emotional Functioning only [ 14 , 25 ], whereas others showed differences on a larger variety of subscales and on the Total Score [ 23 , 24 , 26 28 ].…”
