Examining the critical role of advanced practice providers on a multidisciplinary transplant team

Abstract: It is well documented that Physician Assistants (PAs) and Nurse Practitioners (NPs), collectively known as Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), have a beneficial role beyond the field of primary care. APPs broad spectrum of knowledge make them particularly well suited for specializing in complex fields such as transplant. Variations in practice across transplant centers lead to questions regarding optimal use of APPs. “…Chambers et al performed a comprehensive review of APP job descriptions from transplant centers across the nation. The findings demonstrate the integral nature in which APPs are utilized across the transplant care spectrum with responsibilities ranging from direct patient care to program leadership [7 ▪▪ ]. Table 1 provides a summary of the conventional and evolving roles and responsibilities described collectively in the literature [5,7 ▪▪ ,8–16].…”

“…The majority of articles, eight out of 12, were centered around the conventional roles and responsibilities of a transplant APP as part of the multidisciplinary team. In addition to providing medical care to patients pre and post transplant, the importance of APPs acting as liaisons between the transplant team and supporting services, as well as educating patients and families was highlighted [7 ▪▪ ,8]. The value of invested APPs should not to be overlooked given that many transplant centers exist within academic institutions with frequent rotation of residents and fellows.…”

“…Often, AHNP provided continuity of care by being the link between the patient and the transplant team, enabling holistic patient care beyond medical outcomes, and being aware of the impact of individual family environments on the ability to adapt to their chronic condition both pre-and posttransplant. 21 Mental health, cognitive and academic development, physical functioning, and nutrition, were addressed by specific AHNP with specialized knowledge and skills, which in turn, positively contributes to patient clinical outcomes and quality of life. 22,23 Each AHNP provided a unique and complementary role within the multidisciplinary team that enhances overall patient care, education, and treatment provision.…”
