The literature reviewed in this chapter shows that the COVID-19 pandemic disproportionately impacted HBCUs, disrupting residential life and exposing vulnerabilities. For instance, the shift to online learning highlighted technological disparities, challenging faculty and students, while financial hardships threatened HBCU survival. However, the pandemic also sparked positive change, fostering stronger crisis management, technological innovation in online learning, and prompting unprecedented philanthropic support. HBCUs experienced record applications amidst national discussions on racial justice. This chapter also examines pandemic-related studies by Clark Atlanta University graduates that examine faculty technology use, the impact of on-campus living on retention, and factors affecting student retention during emergency online learning. It concludes by suggesting future research areas, particularly focusing on crisis management lessons for HBCUs.
