Examples galleries generated by interactive genetic algorithms

Abstract: Examples browsing is a common designer practice in user interface design. Several design galleries can be found on Internet. However, those galleries are hand crafted and thus limited and cumbersome to build. In this paper, we claim for tools for supporting both the production and exploration of examples.. We describe a running prototype based on Interactive Genetic Algorithms (IGA), and relate an early evaluation.

“…In [42], a UI is adapted according to user proÞles, stored in an ontology. User proÞles are also in the center of nomadic adaptable UI design [43,44], exploited in MAGALLEN [45] to synthesize UI prototypes. In the ubiquitous widgets approach [46], user interactions are captured and transmitted by speciÞc components, called IBC (Interactor Business Component) used to implement adaptive UI widgets.…”

“…In these approaches, user proÞles and the environment of the user interface are taken into account for adaptation. Ontologies are used to store user proÞles in approaches like [42,45].…”

“…[4] computer graphics are automatically produced and organized by varying an input vector. In Magellan [5], examples are produced by recombination and variation of websites using a genetic algorithm. Magellan makes evolve 3 aspects of style: the user interface elements, the background and foreground colors and textures, the size and location of the elements.…”
