Excavations at the Neolithic Enclosure on Bury Hill, Houghton, W. Sussex 1979

Abstract: Summary. Excavations at Bury Hill dated a small, continuously-ditched enclosure to the early Neolithic. The interior of the enclosure, c. 1 ha in extent, was sampled by two trial cuttings, 9 m wide, running across the enclosure at right angles to one another. No Neolithic features were found. Sampling the ditch produced early Neolithic pottery, flintwork and animal bone. Though continuous, the ditch had a ‘beaded’ appearance, with a single entrance. No corresponding bank survived, though aerial photographs ind… Show more

“…As can be seen, peak III is form ed, and the reaction is completely insensitive to tunicam ycin. G D P-m annose is known to act as glycosyldonor during the form ation o f lipid -b o u n d trisacch arid e [22], When previously prepared (yeast) D ol-PP -[14C]-(G lcN A c) 2 was incubated w ith unlabelled G D Pmannose, a new lipid was form ed w hich ran on th in layer as expected for D ol-P P -(G lcN A c)2M an (Table V). Its synthesis was insensitive to tunicamicyn.…”

“…None of these points can be proven, and it is impossible to argue further without more fieldwork and excavation. Whilst the enclosure does not appear to have a close morphological affinity with Neolithic causewayed enclosures or larger henges such as Marden and Durrington Walls, it has characteristics reminiscent of the Neolithic enclosures at Bury Hill, West Sussex (Bedwin 1981), Duggleby Howe, Yorkshire (Kinnes et aJ. 1983) and Lyles Hill in Ireland (Gibson & Simpson 1982).…”
