Abstract: The background to the Society's involvement with the part of the site of Ptolemais known as the North-East Quadrant has been outlined in a previous report in this Journal. (Annual Report of the Society for Libyan Studies 1977–78)Following a short two week season in 1978, under the overall direction of J. B. “…Opinion has tended to favour east Mediterranean influence and a Hellenistic date for the local development of the type (see, for example, Stucchi 1975, 143;Ward-Perkins 1981, 369-370), but others have argued for Italian models (see, for example , Mackay 1975, 225). The resumption of Goodchild's excavations of several large town-houses at Ptolemais by Little and Ward-Perkins was intended in part to elucidate these problems (Gibson, Little and Ward-Perkins 1978;Little 1980;. An exemplary structural report is now available (Ward-Perkins, Little and Mattingly 1986), which offers hypotheses about the dating of the many phases which the houses exhibit.…”

“…This building was an obvious choice for renewed survey, when Ward-Perkins recommenced work at Ptolemais in 1971. In the event, the major survey work on this building (hereafter House T) was not undertaken until the second season in 1978 and continued in 1979 (Gibson et al 1978;Little 1980;Vickers 1972, 40;Ward-Perkins 1971, 8). The major work of survey was undertaken by Ward-Perkins himself and Miss Sheila Gibson, whose excellent plans, elevations and axonometric reconstruction illustrate this report.…”
