Exchangeable cations and cation exchange capacity of forest soil samples: Effects of drying, storage, and horizon

Abstract: (NHaOAc, were.determined for forest soil samples as follows: (1) before drying, and (2) at several time intervals after air-drvine (1, 5, 1l and 14 wk)' Values for CEC were obtained for the same samples by determining (1) the sum of cations (Aili,'Cu1i , Mg'* ,5*, Nu*' Fe3*' and Mn2*) in the extracts [denoted CEC(Dcations)NH,or" and CEClDcations)pso6l], and (2) the amount of ammonium retained by the soil samples against water-w1shi"g fa"".ii8a"c'ec(NHooAc) ano cgCir.IFrocl)]. The soils used in this investig… Show more

“…The decomposition of soil organic matter that closely interacts with Al as a stable form in soil solids might be able to release soluble Al (Meyer and Arp 1994). This may be a possible reason for the larger extracts of Al at the surface horizon in the Ta Teng soil profile.…”

“…Secondly, we used air-dried humus and soil samples in the extraction of cations in the first determination (t1), whereas in the second determination (t2) we used field-moist samples. Drying of soil samples has been shown to increase the amount of Al and Ca extracted per unit soil mass (Meyer and Arp, 1994). Thus, in both cases the change in method could have contributed to the observed decrease in cation concentration (e.g.…”

“…Subsamples of soil to be analyzed for phosphorus were extracted using the Bray method. Subsamples of soil to be analyzed Ⅱ for exchangeable K + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , Na + , and Al 3+ were extracted with 1 mol L -1 NH 4 Cl solution (Meyer and Arp 1994). The above-mentioned elements were determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometer (Shimadzu, ICPS-2000, Kyoto, Japan).…”
