“…Olney and Asher (42) reported 90% mobility compared with the contralateral side. The 2 poor results in their series resulted from insufficient resection.…”

“…Historically, the operative procedure of choice after failure of adequate conservative management has been fusion. More recently, good clinical results have been reported after operative resection of the coalition, with the advantages of preserving hindfoot motion and pain relief (16,(20)(21)(22)(37)(38)(39)(40)(41)(42)(43). However, the optimal operative treatment has not yet been determined (44).…”

“…When preoperative imaging studies (CT or magnetic resonance imaging) do not show any degenerative changes in the posterior facet, resection of the coalition is possible with interposition to minimize the risk of coalition recurrence. Typically, a fat graft or tendon interposition is placed in the zone of resection (42,45). In our series, because of the absence of degenerative changes on the preoperative imaging assessment, resection of the coalition with silicone sheet interposition was performed to prevent recurrence of bone fusion.…”

“…Many investigators have considered interposition to be a method of recurrence prevention, and fat graft interposition has often been used (16,39,41,42). Olney and Asher (42) reported 90% mobility compared with the contralateral side.…”

“…They occur in association with carpal coalitions, phocomelia, hemimelia [12]. 83% are talocalcaneal leading to tarsal tunnel syndrome, osteophyte causing sensory disturbance in the region of medial plantar nerve and restriction of plantar flexion at the ankle joint [13]. Calcaneal fractures account for 33.3% of foot fractures.…”
In our study, Type-1 was common followed by Type-2. Race appears to play a part in the determination of the type of facets and hence this study will be useful for the orthopedics surgeons during various surgical procedures.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
