Excitation of O(1S) auroral green line from ambient air in a microwave-induced plasma jet at atmospheric pressure

Abstract: Strong emission from the auroral green line O( 1 S) G O( 1 D) at 557.7 nm was observed in the afterglow of an atmospheric-pressure 2.45 GHz microwave-induced plasma jet. The device used Ar as the working gas for the plasma, and a surrounding N 2 gas flow to stabilize the discharge. The characteristic line-shape of the peak at 557.7 nm indicated that the emission was from the O( 1 S)N 2 excimer. Vibrational temperatures of NO and N 2 , estimated based on the emission spectra of the afterglow, were compared agai… Show more

“…The spectral shape is similar to those shown in literature. 12,[14][15][16][17] This optical emission is the source of the green plasma jet shown in Figure 2b. Figure 4a shows the medium-resolution spectra of the N 2 and N 2 /O 2 plasma jets, which were measured using the Czerny-Turner spectrograph with a focal length of 50 cm.…”

“…The authors of some papers notice the optical emission at around 557 nm in oxygen containing atmospheric-pressure plasmas. [11][12][13][14][15][16][17] The shapes of the optical emission spectra are not narrow lines but have molecular-band structures. They assigned the band emission to the formation of OAr *15 and ON * 2 excimers.…”

“…As of now, only a few researchers have tried to artificially form the green line at atmospheric pressure using mixtures of in either dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) or in microwave induced argon plasma jets where the green line was reported to be from the emission of the excimer 11 . However, the experiments in DBD discharges using mixtures only measured weak emission from the O( S) compared to NO and .…”

“…As a result, these lines were observed only at higher flow rate and at lower power. Moreover, the plasma length was 1 cm which may not be very useful from the perspective of applications 11 , 14 .…”
