Excretion Patterns of Fecal Progestagens, Androgen and Estrogens During Pregnancy, Parturition and Postpartum in Okapi (Okapia johnstoni)

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of the present study was to establish a simple method to monitor ovarian activity and non-invasively diagnose pregnancy in okapi (Okapia johnstoni). The feces of a female okapi were collected daily or every 3 days for 28 months. Steroids in lyophilized feces were extracted with 80% methanol, and the fecal levels of immunoreactive progestagens (progesterone and pregnanediolglucuronide), androgen (testosterone), and estrogens (estradiol-17β and estrone) were determined by enzyme immunoassays wi… Show more

“…For the assay of serum progestin, serum samples were extracted twice with ethyl ether. Fecal progestin was extracted using a methanol extraction method [17,18]. Briefly, frozen fecal samples were lyo- philized for approximately 48 h and then pulverized by hand to separate the fecal powder from the fibrous material.…”

“…Hormone levels have been measured in materials other than blood, such as feces, milk, saliva and urine [9][10][11][12][13][14]. Of these sources, feces can be collected conveniently and noninvasively, and hormone levels in feces from a wide variety of wild animals have been investigated to investigate their reproductive functions [15][16][17][18][19][20].…”
