Executive function in teen and adult women: Association with maternal status and early adversity

Abstract: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of maternal age on executive function and the moderating effects of women's maternal status and early-life experiences. Four groups of women were assessed as a function of their age (teens vs. adults) and maternal status (mothers vs. nonmothers). Participants completed executive function tests, including Spatial Working Memory (SWM), Intra-Extra-Dimensional-Set-Shift (IED), and Stockings of Cambridge (SOC). Women also completed the Childhood Trauma Questionnair… Show more

“…Finally, and not surprisingly, optimal mothering and its psychological profile are affected by mothers' early and other life experiences and their effects can be transmitted to the next generation of mothers. 56,[74][75][76] Looking to the animal work and to human studies, and by understanding the phenomenology of mothering and its neurochemistry and neurobiology, we are in a good position to choose candidate genes. We look both to the animal work on the role of gene expression and gene products on maternal and associated behaviors, especially in rodents but extending up to nonhuman primates and humans.…”

“…Pregnancy history is associated, however, with mixed findings on cognition in middle age, and conflicting data may be due to both the type of cognition tested and pregnancy history characteristics such as amount of parity and age of first pregnancy (Colucci et al, 2006;Cui et al, 2014;Gatewood et al, 2005;Jang et al, 2018;Puri et al, 2023). Earlier ages of first pregnancy show less beneficial effects on cognition and increased dementia risk later in life compared to later ages of first pregnancy (Almanza-Sepulveda et al, 2018;Chico et al, 2014;Fu et al, 2023;Gong et al, 2022;Rocca et al, 1991). Although there is clear evidence pregnancy leaves long-term signatures on the brain and on behavior, pregnancy characteristics, such as the age of first pregnancy, remain largely understudied.…”
