Exercise Training and Outcomes in Hemodialysis Patients: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract: Background: Inadequate dialysis, renal hypertension, and impaired exercise capacity are factors that affect the quality of life (QoL) and mortality of adults with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD). This systematic review provided valid evidence about the effect of exercise training on single-pool Kt/V (sp Kt/V), blood pressure, and peak uptake oxygen (VO2 peak). Method: A systematic review and meta-analysis of published randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated the effects of… Show more

“…Quality of life is very important for patients who need lifelong treatment, such as haemodialysis. Many studies of haemodialysis patients have used exercise programs as interventions to improve quality of life as well as exercise capacity (Huang et al, 2019). Another study involving an 8‐week dietary program also significantly improved quality of life in haemodialysis patients (Yun & Choi, 2016).…”

“…The results of the Cochrane systematic review 5 showed that regular exercise can improve health-related quality of life in patients with chronic kidney disease. Huang et al’s 32 systematic review also showed that various types of exercise, when exercised for more than eight weeks, can effectively improve health-related quality of life in dialysis patients. What’s more, in the result of this study’s quality of life, due to use of a different quality-of-life scale—RAND scale, Rossi’s study did not conduct the merging of effect value.…”
