Exercise Training in Elderly Cancer Patients: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Due to the aging of the population, in 70% of cases, a new cancer diagnosis equals a cancer diagnosis in a geriatric patient. In this population, beyond the concept of mortality and morbidity, functional capacity, disability, and quality of life remain crucial. In fact, when the functional status is preserved, the pathogenetic curve towards disability will stop or even regress. The present systematic review investigated the effectiveness of physical exercise, as part of a holistic assessment of the patient, fo… Show more

“…This presents an opportunity for timely interventions to identify and mitigate frailty in older adults, promoting health and cancer outcomes. Mitigating frailty has received increasing attention in recent years because of its significant social, health, and well-being implications [24]. Given frailty is not a permanent state – it can potentially be reversed with appropriate interventions [25].…”

“…In addition, exercise training is a key component of multidimensional cardio-oncology strategies that can be used at any stage of cancer, especially in frail patients. 102–104 Notably, approaching the elderly population highlights several aspects that should be carefully considered: frailty, social isolation, malnutrition, cognitive decline, dementia, disability, other geriatric syndromes, and overall QOL. 102 , 103 …”

“…However, the evidence on the effectiveness of prehabilitation in frail surgical patients of advanced age is sparse. Recent systematic reviews found that the main focus of current trials in frail surgical patients lies in the prevention of disability (13)(14)(15). Positive effects were found on the reduction of the length of stay and complications, as well as on the improvement of post-surgical functional capacity.…”

“…Overall, the available body of evidence often focuses on cancer (10,12,16,14,17,18) or orthopaedic surgeries (11,19), and is predominantly of low quality. Moreover, recent systematic reviews did not identify any cost-effectiveness studies of prehabilitation in frail surgical patients of advanced age (20,15).…”
